The God Who Leads Us Out

The scriptures tell us that Moses was made a God to Aaron and the children of Israel but to Pharaoh, a prophet. God has power to command because his subjects obey. When they do not obey then to them, he must be a prophet whose purpose is to warn.

A prophet so often has such a miserable clientele but even God at times must be a prophet to the wicked.

Aaron’s God:

“And thou shalt speak unto him (Aaron) and put words in his mouth; and I will be with thy mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what ye shall do.
And he shall be thy spokesman unto the people; and he shall be, even he shall be to thee instead of a mouth, and thou (Moses) shalt be to him instead of God” (you will be Aaron’s God). JST Exodus 4:15-16

Pharaoh’s Prophet:

And the Lord said unto Moses, See, I have made thee a prophet to Pharaoh; and Aaron thy brother shall be thy spokesman.” (KJV says “God to Pharaoh” but Joseph in the JST translation corrected this to say “prophet” because Pharaoh would not be commanded by Moses)

Israel’s God.

“Therefore, lift up your heads, and rejoice, and put your trust in God, in that God who was the God of Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob; and also, that God (Moses) who brought the Children of Israel out of the Land of Egypt, and caused that they should walk through the Red Sea on dry ground, and fed them with manna, that they might not perish in the wilderness; and many more things did he (Moses) do for them. Mosiah 7:19

Nephi’s God:

“And again: That same God (Lehi) hath brought our fathers out of the land of Jerusalem, and hath kept and preserved his people, even until now. And behold, it is because of our iniquities and abominations that has brought us into bondage. Mosiah 7:20

Israel’s God and Nephi’s God are the Same Being:

“…and I will praise him forever, for he hath brought our fathers out of Egypt, and he hath swallowed up the Egyptians in the red sea; and he led them by his power into the promised land; yea and he hath delivered them out of bondage and captivity from time to time; yea, and he hath also brought our fathers out of Jerusalem; and he hath also by his everlasting power, delivered them out of bondage and captivity from time to time, even down to the present day…” Alma 36:28-29

The ones in bondage to sin don’t search the scriptures for the mysteries of God to get themselves out of filthy waters. There has to be one sent from Heaven, even God himself as Abinidi testified, in the flesh to lead them out from “time to time.”

And yet His people still rebel:

“and notwithstanding they being led, the Lord their God, their Redeemer, going before them, leading them by day, and giving light unto them by night, and doing all things for them which was expedient for man to receive, they hardened their hearts, and blinded their minds, and reviled against Moses and against the true and living God.” 1 Nephi 17:30

God can be entirely in our midst and we can still miss it. It’s why we can sit with him in the midst of His house and He with us waiting for our God to show up and we would never know as Peter did that: “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God.”

“Our father Lehi was driven out of Jerusalem, because he testified of these things. Nephi also testified of these things, and also almost all our fathers, even down to this time. yea, they have testified of the coming of Christ, and have looked forward, and have rejoiced in his day which is to come.

And behold he is God, and he is with them, and he did manifest himself unto them, that they were redeemed by him; and they gave unto him glory, because of that which is to come.” Helaman 8:22-23

Lehi Lead His Children Out of Jerusalem to the Promised Land:

“I am Mormon, and a pure descendant of Lehi. I have reason to bless my God and my Saviour Jesus Christ, that he brought our fathers out of the land of Jerusalem, (and no one knew it save it were himself and those which he brought out of that land,) and that he hath given me and my people so much knowledge unto the salvation of our souls….

And insomuch as the children of Lehi hath kept his commandments (are we not his children subject to the conditions he set for living in the land of promise which his God has given him?) he hath blessed them (in the context of this passage, it is apparent that it is Father Lehi who blesses his children in the promised land) and prospered them according to his word;

yea, and surely shall he again bring a remnant of the seed of Joseph to the knowledge of the Lord their God;and as surely as the Lord liveth will he gather in from the four quarters of the earth all the remnant of the seed of Jacob which are scattered abroad upon all the face of the earth;

and as he hath covenanted with all the house of Jacob, even so shall the covenant wherewith he hath covenanted with the house of Jacob, be fulfilled in his own due time, unto the restoring all the house of Jacob, unto the knowledge of the covenant that he hath covenanted with them;

and then shall they know their Redeemer, which is Jesus Christ, the Son of God; and then shall they be gathered in from the four quarters of the earth, unto their own lands, from whence they have been dispersed; yea as the Lord liveth, so shall it be. Amen.” 3 Nephi 5: 20-26

It is God that comes down from time to time to search out the lost sheep and carry them home on his shoulders. It is He that pays the price to recover us. It is He that is our Redeemer, Lord, and God.

To the Jews living in Jerusalem, for the majority, Jesus could not be their King because they would not obey. For the majority of the Jews living in Jerusalem, Jesus could not be their God because they would not believe. To them, Jesus Christ was a missed opportunity. To them, as Jesus said in the book of John, the devil was their father. To them, Jesus could be no more than a prophet.

Likewise to them living here in the Promised Land Joseph Smith Jr. could not be their king but a prophet because they would not be ruled. To them he could not be a father because they would not believe. To them Joseph Smith Jr. was a missed opportunity. To the few, He is God.
